What We Learned At CIEX

Last month’s Chemical Innovation Exchange (CIEX) Summit brought together leaders from across the chemical industry — CEOs, CTOs, researchers, investors — all under one roof here at The Heritage Group in Indianapolis.

CIEX has always been about sparking collaboration and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in chemistry and materials science. And that’s exactly what happened. The smaller, more intimate setting of this year’s summit gave people the space to share not just their big wins, but also the challenges they can’t solve alone.

As our own Sibel Selcuk, EVP of Heritage Research Group, put it:

“Hosting CIEX is one of the most significant events of my year. It’s an opportunity to reunite with longtime friends and meet new colleagues from across the industry. I always look forward to the dynamic collaborations and innovative exchanges that take place at the forefront of our field.”

Highlights and Takeaways

Here are a few of the things that stood out:

  • Openness and Vulnerability
The format encouraged leaders to discuss not only breakthroughs but also existential challenges. Scientific leadership from visiting companies used their sessions to highlight pressing issues in manufacturing and product development – representative of the honest, problem-sharing dialogue that defined the summit.
  • Companies willing to share both sides of the coin
Leaders shared progress in sustainability and new product development while acknowledging the difficulties of scaling solutions in a shifting global market.
  • Connections that count
The speed networking sessions were a hit — quick, focused conversations that helped people build relationships that could turn into real partnerships.
  • AI is all over the map
The conversation around artificial intelligence underscored how uneven adoption remains across the chemical sector.

    • On one end, companies are emulating pharma’s advanced AI integration.
    • On the other, many are still experimenting and “figuring it out.”
    • Across the board, leaders agreed that a strong data foundation that includes well-structured systems and quality datasets will be essential for effectively leveraging AI in the future.

Big Picture

If there was one theme running through CIEX, it was this: collaboration is key. No single company has all the answers — and that’s okay. By being open, sharing both wins and struggles, and building strong networks, we’re moving the entire industry forward.

As CIEX returns to Indianapolis in 2026, The Heritage Group is proud to continue serving as a hub for these conversations. With leaders openly sharing both breakthroughs and barriers, the summit demonstrates that collaboration is the most powerful catalyst for innovation.

More Than a Meal: Partnering with Second Helpings to Nourish People, Planet and Communities

At The Heritage Group, sustainability is about more than protecting the environment—it’s about creating long-term value for people, planet and the communities we call home. That belief drives our partnership with Second Helpings, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit transforming rescued food into nourishment for neighbors in need.

Through food rescue, culinary job training and hunger relief, Second Helpings is a powerful force for good in Central Indiana—and we’re proud to stand alongside them.

Each year, more than 3.7 million pounds of perfectly good food—once bound for landfills—is rescued and redirected into nutritious meals for those experiencing food insecurity. This partnership directly aligns with our definition of sustainability: practical, people-focused solutions that reduce waste and deliver meaningful impact.

“Our partnership with Second Helpings is a clear example of how our approach to sustainability comes to life—not just through innovation, but through service,” said Tom Doherty, EVP, Portfolio Enablement at The Heritage Group. “It’s a model for how we can build lasting impact by showing up for people and supporting the communities we serve.”

Whether it’s lending our support to events like Corks & Forks, Tonic Ball or helping to pack shelves and spread awareness during the Gr8 Pasta Push, our relationship with Second Helpings is grounded in shared values. We’re committed to enacting sustainable practices while ensuring our neighbors have access to the meals they need to thrive.

“Second Helpings represents the kind of impact we strive for across The Heritage Group—where sustainability isn’t just environmental, but human,” said Tom. “It’s about using our resources wisely, lifting up our neighbors and building prosperous communities that can thrive long term.”

Behind the scenes, the heart of this partnership is our people. THG employees regularly volunteer in the Second Helpings kitchen—chopping vegetables, prepping ingredients and packaging meals for distribution across the city. It’s hands-on work that brings our values to life.

“Whether I’m at Tonic Ball enjoying the music or in the Second Helpings kitchen seeing the meals being prepared, I’m reminded that sustainability is about leaving our people, planet and communities better than we found them,” said Tom. “This partnership reflects the best of who we are at The Heritage Group.”

From departmental teams to individuals, this is part of a broader commitment we call United for Service—a campaign that empowers our employees to give back in ways that matter most to them and their communities.

Every meal prepared, every hour volunteered, every pound of food rescued tells a story of connection and care. With Second Helpings, we’re building a more sustainable and compassionate future—one meal at a time.

Investing in the Future, One Curious Mind at a Time

We talk often about the importance of family — not just as a core value, but as a guiding principle. Kids Science Camp is one of the clearest expressions of that commitment. It gives our children a hands-on look at how science can solve real-world problems, while helping them imagine themselves as the scientists, engineers and innovators of tomorrow.

That belief is at the heart of our annual Kids Science Camp, a three-day experience designed to spark imagination, nurture a passion for STEM and connect the next generation to the work we do every day. Since 2014, this program has invited children of Heritage employees, ages 8 to 12, to roll up their sleeves, ask questions and explore the science that powers our industries — from materials science and construction to environmental innovation and chemical engineering.

In recent years, we’ve been fortunate to partner with the world-class Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, whose immersive exhibits and expert educators have elevated the learning experience. But what makes this camp truly special is what it represents: a tangible investment in the future of science and STEM-based learning.

My hope is that this spark of curiosity stays with them — that it grows into a passion, and maybe even a career path that brings them back to us one day, not as campers, but as colleagues.

Because when we say we’re building the future, we mean it — and it starts with investing in theirs.

Partnering with Orr Fellowship to Develop the Next Generation of Talent

At The Heritage Group, we believe in betting on talent — whether it’s an intern just getting started or a seasoned employee driving innovation. Big ideas can come from anyone, anywhere, at any time. That’s why we’re committed to growing and developing the next generation of talent.

Our internship programs for high school and college students help prepare young people for the workforce. But what about those who have just graduated?

In 2019, The Heritage Group proudly began partnering with Orr Fellowship — a two-year, post-graduate program that connects versatile, high-achieving college graduates with future-focused Indiana businesses. Founded in 2001 and named after former Indiana Governor Bob Orr, the program is designed to foster the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Today, Orr Fellowship partners with more than 70 organizations across Indianapolis and Evansville, supporting 120 fellows from more than 30 colleges and universities across the country. Backed by an alumni network of over 650+ professionals, fellows gain access to tools, training and mentorship to launch meaningful careers.

Since joining the program, The Heritage Group has helped develop program participants and welcomed many Orr alumni into full-time roles across our family of companies. Over their two-year commitment, THG Fellows complete three 8-month rotations, gaining exposure to a wide range of industries, leadership styles and team dynamics. This unique structure allows fellows to explore personal and professional interests while making an impact from day one.

By investing in programs like Orr Fellowship, we’re proud to help shape Indiana’s workforce — and support the growth of driven, curious and collaborative young professionals.

What current Orr Fellows have to say about THG:
