As demand for more sustainable solutions continues to reshape the fuels industry, customers need partners that are ready to move with the market.
Monument Chemical is taking an important step to do just that.
Monument recently received key IRS registrations that position our Port Arthur, Texas, facility to produce Sustainable Paraffinic Kerosene (SPK), the renewable component used in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends.
“This is about getting ahead of where the market is going and making sure we’re ready to support our customers as opportunities develop,” said Umair Virani, Senior Director, Custom Manufacturing. “Sustainability is increasingly important across our industry, and we want to be a partner who can help customers turn those goals into real solutions.”
The process starts with renewable diesel supplied by a customer. Using Monument’s existing distillation capabilities, Monument can separate the lighter SPK fraction from the renewable diesel, returning both SPK and residual renewable diesel to the customer. The SPK can then be used as the renewable component in SAF blends.
While the U.S. SAF market is still developing, momentum is growing globally, particularly in Europe, where mandates are accelerating adoption. Monument already brings more than a decade of experience with this type of processing at our Antwerp, Belgium, facility.
Now, the Port Arthur registration creates the potential to bring that capability closer to customers in the U.S., supported by the site’s strategic Gulf Coast location and connectivity to the fuels industry.
In conjunction with the IRS efforts, Monument also achieved ISCC Corsia certification, which allows operators and suppliers to demonstrate compliance with global aviation sustainability standards.
“Completing these steps was a significant undertaking that took a couple of years of work behind the scenes,” said Matt Overaker, Tax Director. “We’ve put an important piece in place. As the market evolves, we’ll be ready to work with customers to explore what’s possible.”
